Wombats are stout, sturdy marsupials. Their sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make them great diggers. They can grow up to 1.3 metres in length, and can weight up to 36 kg. There are three varieties of wombat. The common wombat, southern hairy nose, and the northern hairy nosed wombat. Sadly the later is close to extinction.
Wombats emerge  from their burrow in late afternoon or evening to forage for food. Their diet is herbivorous and consists of native grasses, sedges and the roots of shrubs and trees. They cut their food with sharp, chisel - like front teeth that grow continuously. During the day they retreat to their burrows and sleep peacefully often on their backs  all feet in the air! (note the detail of the feet and toes on this bead) They are marsupials which means they have a pouch, but cleverly the wombat pouch faces backwards, which stops soil and twigs getting caught in it when the mother digs. A baby wombat will stay in the pouch for between seven and ten months. Mother and child develop a close bond with the juvenile spending up to two years hanging out with mum.
